The experience

Four days in the bush, where nothing is urgent.

The last of the road is gravel. After that there is a track, and then there is birdsong.

It takes about a day to stop listening for a pager.

You are not on call. Nobody needs a decision from you.

Everyone here does the same work, so none of it needs explaining.

Nobody will ask you to talk about anything you would rather not.

You are looked after — which takes most of us a day or two to allow.

Mornings are unstructured on purpose. Sleep, walk, or sit by the water.

None of the science here will be new to you. Making room for it is the work.

Then you go back, carrying something you did not arrive with.

We run one of these a year, and this one is full. The list is how you hear when the next opens.

What Align is

small, and run by people who do the job

Align is the retreat arm of Your Lifestyle Medics. Marissa Kelaher and Morgana Woolhouse-Williams run it, and both still work in clinical practice.

Fifteen places. That is the number where everyone in the room gets spoken to.

The programme covers sleep, food, movement, stress and habit change: lifestyle medicine you already use on patients, turned around and pointed at you. Nobody has to explain the job to anybody.
